Meet Dr. Thompson
Jeremy M. Thompson, DDS, MS, grew up in West Virginia but now considers himself an adopted Texan. He completed his bachelor’s of science and doctor of dental surgery degrees at Ohio State University. After that, Dr. Thompson served eight years as an Army dentist. During that time, he completed specialty training in endodontics at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, learning advanced root canal techniques. He earned his master’s degree at the Medical College of Georgia. As an endodontist, Dr. Thompson specializes in treating the tooth’s interior. He says, “Root canal specialists can drastically improve a patient’s life on the same day we meet them if they are suffering from a toothache or infection. That’s very gratifying.”
In 2014, Dr. Thompson completed a series of examinations by the American Board of Endodontics, which qualifies him as a board-certified endodontist, a distinction obtained by only about one-fifth of endodontists. Examinations included a written exam, an examination of his previous endodontic work, and an oral exam.
Drawn to dentistry because it combines his passions for science, technology, and hands-on work, Dr. Thompson says,
“We often see patients who never have had root canal treatment or had it decades ago. The way I learned endodontics in my specialty training in the Army was advanced far beyond what I was taught in dental school. The continued advancements in imaging and local anesthetic techniques and the instruments and materials we use have made it easier for providers and more comfortable for patients. Modern endodontics can change a patient’s perspective on dentistry as a whole. I love to see patients realize that dentistry is not what it used to be, and usually not what they expected.”
Dr. Thompson is a member of the American Society of Forensic Odontology and is working toward board certification in that specialized area. In January 2024 he completed a fellowship in forensic dentistry at Lincoln Memorial University College of Dental Medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee.
When not at the office, Dr. Thompson enjoys cooking and appreciates the great produce and array of international ingredients available in diverse San Antonio. The doctor lives with his wife, their daughter, and their two standard poodles. He and his family love spending time outdoors.
Regarding hobbies, Dr. Thompson shares: “I am not widely traveled. I haven’t strayed beyond North America and some of the closer tropical islands. But when my friends or family travel to exotic places, I usually ask them to bring me some of the local currency. It is a good way to learn about a country because currency often has pictures of famous people, landmarks, architecture, culture, or nature. I have currency from close to 40 countries.”
