How Long Can You Put Off a Root Canal Treatment?
I have a unique question. A dentist told me at my last appointment that I needed a root canal treatment. I had no money and was not able to get it. I have some money now, but the tooth isn’t hurting. Is it still necessary to get one? Can you put off a root canal treatment indefinitely?

Hi Brenda,

Please bear in mind that I have not examined you or seen any x-rays. I can only give you general advice, that may not completely relate to your particular situation. If your tooth is not hurting and hasn’t for a while, then putting off your root canal treatment could be fine. You could have what is known as an arrested infection. It will still impact your general health, but you may not notice the difference until you actually have the root canal done and discover you feel a little better overall.
One thing you risk, even with an arrested infection is something known as external resorption. This is when the infection slowly eats away at the root of your tooth. Left untreated, the tooth will eventually get to the point where it can no longer be saved and your only option will be to extract the tooth and replace it.
When Is It Important to Have a Root Canal Treatment?
If there are any signs of an active infection, then you will want to get this attended to. Don’t leave it and let it turn into a dental emergency. These can turn life threating.
What are some signs of an active infection?
First, pain. If it is hurting or recently been hurting, schedule that appointment. A second indicator is either drainage in your mouth or a pimple on your gums. This is a sign that you have an abscess and the infection is spilling out of your tooth and spreading. These are dangerous and you do not want to put them off.
I hope this helps.
