Is a Tooth Infection Dangerous?

I broke a molar a couple of weeks ago. Now, the tooth has been hurting. The pain has spread past the molar and into my temple area. I think it could be in referred pain from the tooth, but my sister thinks the tooth is infected and that it is spreading. I think I can just take some leftover antibiotics. My sister thinks that I’m being stupid and says that tooth infections are dangerous. People have toothaches all the time and they’re just fine. Is she overreacting or are they actually dangerous?

Peter

Dear Peter,

A man grabbing his jaw in pain for a tooth infection.

I’m glad you wrote. We have great dental care in the U.S. so people don’t often see what can happen when things go wrong. Believe it or not, people still die from untreated tooth infections. Your sister is correct. It sounds like you have a tooth infection and it is spreading. I would consider that a dental emergency.

I’m afraid that you cannot treat a tooth infection with an antibiotic. While they can help hold an infection at bay until you get the needed treatment, there is only one real solution — to remove the infected pulp. There are two treatments that can accomplish this. The first is a root canal treatment. This is the ideal option because it enables you to save your tooth. If a root canal treatment is not possible, the next option is to extract the tooth.

When that happens, you will also need to replace the tooth. Otherwise, the adjacent teeth will shift or tip into the open space. This can lead to TMJ Disorder. When it comes to tooth replacements, your best option would be to get a dental implant. This is the closest to having a healthy, natural tooth in your mouth again.

Your first priority is to get that tooth looked at right away. Most dentists leave some room in their appointments for emergencies such as yours.
